Detecting and Correcting Errors

Editing Error Identification and Correction: In this type of exercise, a short text is given with an error in each line against which a blank is given. Students are required to identify the error and then  to correct it. In the answer they have to write the incorrect word/phrase and then the correct one which is highlighted by underlining it. The error may be related to any part of speech in a sentence.

Remember :

  • Read the passage carefully.
  • Identify the tense used in the passage. See if it is appropriate to the context.
  • Look for errors in nouns, their number, pronouns, verb forms, degree of adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions, determiners etc.
  • Ensure that the verb agrees with the subject both in number and person. In most cases a singular subject takes a singular verb and a plural subject takes a plural verb.
  • Question : The following passage has not been edited. There is one error in each line. Write the incorrect word and the correction in your answer sheet against the correct question n umber. Remember to underline the word you have supplied.
